Older Michiganians Day 2011 A Great Success!
Rally  Attended by 750+ Advocates
Senate Press Event Commits to Prioritizing
Elder Abuse Legislation
Older Michiganians Day 2011 featured a rally on the steps of the State Capitol in
Lansing on June 15 2011 to advocate on issues and programs that affect older
Michigan residents.  Over 750 senior advocates from around Michigan attended
the rally and discussed the platform of recommendations for the Governor and
Michigan Legislature to follow.

The day featured presentation of the Senior Citizen of the Year Award by the
Michigan Office of Services to the Aging, which is sponsored by Consumers
Energy. Legislative advocacy focused on  key elder abuse prevention legislation.
Dozens of meetings throughout the capitol complex between senior advocates and
their Legislators were held to discuss issues that seniors are most concerned
about.  While Governor Snyder was unable to attend, several members of his staff
were circulating among the crowd listening to the concerns of attendees.

Thanks to our great sponsors, Presbyterian Villages of Michigan, Priority Health,
and Consumers Energy, whose financial contributions made this event possible.

The platform contains three basic strategies to help Michigan prioritize state
support for older adults in a way that best meets the challenges and opportunities
presented by the economic climate and aging of the population.  The platform
urges Michigan Legislators and the Governor to:

  • Assure access to a full range of high quality long term care options
  • Create more livable communities so older adults will stay in Michigan and
    contribute to our economic recovery
  • Provide greater protections for vulnerable older adults from abuse and
    financial exploitation
