OMD 2010
Michigan Seniors
Urged Legislators and the Governor to:
- Protect services for the most
vulnerable
- Invest in prevention programs that
work and save money
- Make Michigan a retirement
destination of choice
- Close tax loopholes, reform
government, and restructure taxes to
raise needed state revenue
Over 600 seniors, adults with physical disabilities and advocates rallied in Lansing on the
Capitol lawn on June 10, 2010 to implore legislators to protect funding for senior services.
“This Third Annual Older Michiganians Day recognizes that the state’s population is growing
older at a rapid pace and that can be a positive thing. Age brings wisdom and patience, and
experience in dealing with difficult times.” commented Marion Owen, CEO of the Tri-County
Office on Aging in Lansing. “Michigan needs public policies, programs, and strategic
investments that meet the challenges of the aging population and take advantage of the many
social and economic benefits the growing senior population offers. The 2010 Platform offers
solutions that will save the state money, strengthen our state's social fabric, and enhance
protections for vulnerable individuals who depend on the state to maintain their independence.”
The Area Agencies on Aging Association of Michigan, AARP of Michigan, Alzheimer's
Association Greater Michigan Chapter, Michigan Association of Senior Centers, Senior
Volunteer Programs of Michigan, Michigan Directors of Services to the Aging, and the Michigan
Senior Advocates Council partnered to bring seniors and advocates to the Capitol to encourage
elected officials to support the Older Michiganians Day legislative Blueprint for Action.

In addition to the rally on the lawn, seniors and advocates met in small groups with their
representatives and senators to advocate for the legislative priorities outlined in the platform.
