OMD 2009: Senior Power Provides
Solutions to Help Michigan Weather
the Economic Storm
Over 400 seniors, adults with physical disabilities and advocates rallied in Lansing on the
Capitol lawn on Wednesday, June 24, 2009 to implore legislators to protect funding for senior
services. Seniors at the rally held placards reading “Create Choices for Independence”, “Reap
the Wealth of Experience”, and “Elder-Friendly Means Everyone-Friendly.”
“This Second Annual Older Michiganians Day recognizes that the state’s population is growing
older at a rapid pace and that can be a positive thing. Age brings wisdom and patience, and
experience in dealing with difficult times.” commented Marion Owen, CEO of the Tri-County
Office on Aging in Lansing. “Michigan needs public policies, programs, and strategic
investments that meet the challenges of the aging population and take advantage of the many
social and economic benefits the growing senior population offers. The 2009 Platform offers
solutions that will save the state money, strengthen our state's social fabric, and enhance
protections for vulnerable individuals who depend on the state to maintain their independence.”
The Area Agencies on Aging Association of Michigan, AARP of Michigan, Michigan Association
of Senior Centers, Michigan Association of Senior Volunteer Programs, Michigan Directors of
Services to the Aging, Michigan Disability Rights Coalition and the Michigan Senior Advocates
Council partnered to bring seniors and advocates to the Capitol to encourage elected officials
to support the Older Michiganians Day legislative Blueprint for Action.

In addition to the rally on the lawn, seniors and advocates met in small groups with their
