State Capitol Lawn
Lansing, Michigan

10:30 am - 2:30 pm
Over 800 seniors and advocates will gather on the East Lawn of the State Capitol Building on Wednesday, June 20 for Older
Michiganians Day. This annual statewide advocacy day is designed to help give a voice to older adults in Michigan.  The theme of
this year’s event is:  The Senior WAVE:  We Advocate, We Vote, and We Energize the Economy.

State legislators and Governor Rick Snyder will hear where seniors stand on like the importance of support services that enable
older adults to age healthfully and live in the settings they prefer.  Seniors are a $32 billion economic force in Michigan; bringing
in funds from outside the state in the form of Social Security and VA benefits and spending it on things like health care or long-
term care.

Of special concern this year is passage of an 18-bill elder abuse package. The State Senate unanimously passed the bills in
November of 2011 and the bills are now awaiting action from the House. Advocates have tried for nearly six years to pass laws
that protect vulnerable adults from abuse.

The event’s agenda includes individual or small group meetings with lawmakers, speeches from legislative leaders and advocates,
and honorary recognition of senior advocates and volunteers.

Organizers will make sure the day will be comfortable for everyone, with tents for shade and plenty of chairs and bottled water
for participants.  Free, boxed lunches will also be available for those who pre-register for the event and receive a lunch ticket
through their local area agency on aging.

For those who wish to speak out for older adults from their home, State Senators can be reached at 517-373-2400, and State
Representatives at 517-373-0135.  Operators will direct callers to their offices.

This year’s event is being sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and supported by Consumers Energy.  Members of
SilverSneakers will begin the rally with warm-up exercises at 10:20 am.  Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan employees, the Blues
Caring Crew, will be available throughout the day to share healthy living tips and information.

Check out our 2012 Platform for Legislative Action.

The platform contains three basic strategies to help Michigan prioritize state support for older adults in a way that best meets
the challenges and opportunities presented by the economic climate and aging of the population.  The platform urges Michigan
Legislators and the Governor to:

  • Assure access to a full range of high quality long term care options
  • Create more livable communities so older adults will stay in Michigan and contribute to our economic recovery
  • Provide greater protections for vulnerable older adults from abuse and financial exploitation
